Aloha Windward Artists!  There are plenty of shows coming up in the busy summer months.  WAG will be holding one in July this year.  The prospectus is pending.  In the meantime here is another summer show to keep your paintbrushes busy:

Independence Art Exhibit is coming up at Honolulu Hale in the John C. Lane Gallery from May 26 to June 30. They will be highlighting local artists in several media such as oil, acrylic, photography, mixed media, watercolor, pastel. This will be a juried show.

This 3 day Plein Air Workshop on May – 16,17,18 2016 allows students to learn the basics of the plein-air wet-on-wet technique of painting.  Whether you are a budding artist still learning the basics, or an advanced painter, this is a unique opportunity to enhance your skills.  Benefit from one on one attention and explore Oahu’s natural beauty. Lynne has exhibited her artwork internationally and is a Signature Member of Plein Air Painters of Hawaii. She has won several top awards in juried shows.

Dawn Yoshimura will be holding a Color Bridges workshop  (similar to those she runs in Sweden) at the Nohea Gallery on March 19, 2016 from 9 to 11 am. William Zwick is well known in the arts community of Oahu; he the owner and principal instructor at Zwick Academy of Fine Art (ZAFA) in Honolulu. He is extremely accomplished in portraiture, figurative work, and landscape.

He will teach The Figure in Plein Aire for Oil Painters in our first workshop of 2016.

William Zwick will teach The Figure in Plein Aire for Oil Painters as a workshop over 4 consecutive Mondays sessions from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Feb 22, Feb 29 (it’s Leap Day!), March 7 and March 14, 2016.

Session 1 – Elements of figure drawing and painting at ZAFA Studio. Live model.
Session 2 – Elements of Landscape Painting from nature.
Session 3 – We will be working from a live model in a landscape setting.
Session 4 – Same as Session 3.

Participants should already have familiarity with the use of oil paints.
Materials list will be provided after registration.
The workshop is being offered to WAG members. You may renew or join, but you must be a member to participate.

Cost is $200.00. Participants should send a check for the full amount to:

Deadline for registration is February 15, 2016.
The workshop is limited to a maximum of 10 participants, and will be filled on a first come first serve basis. Please write your check payable to “Windward Artists Guild”, and provide your name, phone number, and email address in order to receive updates and the supply list.

A Free Demonstration by Thomas Deir

Thomas Deir, who specializes in everything from tile murals to realism and abstract art, will give a free 2 hour workshop at Ben Franklin in Enchanted Lakes on Saturday, March 19 from Noon till 2:00.

It will consist of planning an idea to a finished colored sketch and then to a painting. There will be no special tools needed, just a note book and a pencil to take notes.

Deir will be prepared do some demonstration of painting techniques as well. Feel free to ask questions along the way. Deir wants to help people express their ideas and show them how he does it. To see some of his work, go to


Holiday Party

It’s almost holiday time and WAG is celebrating in style. We have planned a beautiful catered party at Sherree’s courtyard on the beach. There will be live music and great company, gourmet food and an amazing ambiance. Please join us – if you are not a WAG member, you can join us and get year’s worth of access to exhibits, events, and workshops as well as helping to fund the charitable activities WAG performs every year. Educational grants and sponsorships of events that stimulate the arts in our local area are the focus of WAG’s efforts in the community. See the flyer for details. We hope to see you there!

Please note, you do not have to live on the windward side to be a WAG artist. We were founded on the windward side, and most of our educational grants are centered here, but if you are on Oahu and want to participate, we welcome you!

AHA Miniature Show 2015

The Association of Hawaii Artists (AHA) announces its Fourth Annual Miniature Show opening November 2 through November 28 at the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden, Visitor Center Gallery, 45-680 Luluku Road, Kaneohe, HI. Exhibit hours are daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The public is invited to the opening reception on Saturday, November 14, 4-6 p.m. All artwork is 8×10 inches (without frame) or smaller and will be available for purchase.

Juror James Goodman is an Associate Professor of Art and Dean of Arts and Sciences, Leeward Community College.
Warren Stenberg will be the curator.
Linda Umstead will be chair of the show.
