Rave Reviews and Upcoming News
From WAG’s Education Committee (Eileen Towata and Jan Stiles)
Hey, WAG members, WAG “wanna-be’s”* and anyone interested in improving your art skills – we have great news about art happenings on the windward side.
In June, we offered “Color Workshop for Painters” at that jewel of a location, Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe. Our guide into the fascinating realm of color was Professor Carl Jennings**, who gave us 4 hours of in-depth explanations of color and light as well as many helpful hands-on exercises to start turning those concepts into practical solutions for color choice, mixing and application dilemmas. The sold-out workshop attracted artists working with watercolor, acrylics and oil. It was wonderful to see so many members participate and to have non-members also join in. Open to artists at all levels, even experienced painters gained valuable lessons and unanimously are clamoring for more from Carl:
- “This workshop taught me about important aspects in mixing color that I hadn’t learned before. The take away from this workshop for me was the value of understanding undertones.”
- “The most important thing I learned was to pay attention to the undertones when deciding how to mix colors.”
- “How about we reinvite Carl Jennings and have a painting class this time. We have loved his color theory class.”
So after all those Rave Reviews of Carl, we are pleased to announce the Upcoming News that he will be back this fall to teach another workshop. It is planned for October 19 at Ho’omaluhia. Please keep checking the website for registration procedures which will be posted as soon as all details are finalized. And how convenient is it that the workshop is scheduled for October – when you and all your family and friends will be heading to Ho’omaluhia to check out the annual members’ exhibition in the gallery? That second bit of Upcoming News is also a good reminder to you to pay up your dues as only active WAG members may participate in this open (unjuried) show.
*If you are not yet a member, consider joining so that you can participate in WAG exhibitions as well as receive member workshop discounts. Membership is open to all O’ahu residents.
**A great article by artist Maryanne Long profiling Professor Jennings and his innovative approach to color appeared in Windward O’ahu Voice, January 23, 2019 issue. In addition to being a professor and head of painting/drawing division at Kapi’olani Community College, Carl is also an adjunct faculty member at University of Newcastle (Australia).
Color mixing exercise provides great reference for duplicating desired colors for future needs.
